Obtaining medication in Italy may differ from your home country. In most cases, a medical prescription is mandatory for specialized treatments. Pharmacies in Italy are known as Farmacia.
Two Categories of Medicine
1. Farmaci da Banco (OTC): Over-the-counter medicines such as general painkillers, vitamins, and cold remedies can be purchased without a prescription.
2. Farmaci con Ricetta: To obtain antibiotics and other potent medications, you must have a Ricetta (prescription) issued by your family doctor.
Important Tips for Purchasing Medication
- Tessera Sanitaria: Always present your health card when buying medicine. This ensures your expenses are recorded for your tax return (Dichiarazione dei redditi), allowing you to claim a tax deduction at the end of the year.
- Scontrino Parlante: Check that the pharmacy receipt includes your Codice Fiscale (Tax Code).
- Ticket: For certain government-approved essential medicines, you only need to pay a small co-payment called a "Ticket," while the government covers the remaining cost.

Standard pharmacies in Italy usually close around 7:30 PM or 8:00 PM. However, in case of emergencies during the night or on holidays, information about on-call pharmacies (Di Turno) is displayed on the front window of every pharmacy.
