How to Correctly Apply for the Italian Health Card (Tessera Sanitaria)

For anyone living in Italy, the Tessera Sanitaria is the most important document for accessing public healthcare services for free or at a very low cost. From purchasing medicine to booking specialist exams, this card is essential.

Primary Documents Required

Before registering, prepare the original documents and photocopies of the following:

Identity Card

Carta d'Identità

Residence Permit

Permesso di Soggiorno

Tax Code

Codice Fiscale

Step-by-Step Registration Process

01. Visit the ASL Office

You must visit the ASL (Azienda Sanitaria Locale) office corresponding to your registered address (Residenza). It is recommended to go during morning hours with all the documents listed above.

02. Choosing a Family Doctor

During registration, you will be asked to choose a Medico di Base (Family Doctor). It is best to select a doctor located close to your home for your convenience.

03. Receiving Your Temporary Certificate

Immediately after registering, you will be given a printed paper certificate. This acts as your temporary health card and can be used for any medical need until the plastic card arrives.

Lankio Pro Tip: Make sure to renew your card at least one month before it expires. In many regions, this renewal can now be completed online using your SPID.

Receiving the Physical Card

Your permanent plastic health card will be delivered to your home address via the Italian postal service (Poste Italiane) within 2 to 4 weeks. Keep your temporary paper certificate safe until the card arrives.
