Past Tense with Essere (Passato Prossimo - Part 02)

๐Ÿ”Š Click on the Italian words to hear the pronunciation slowly.

Grammar Introduction (Movement & Change)

In Italian, verbs that show movement, a state of being, or a change in condition use the auxiliary verb 'Essere' (to be) instead of 'Avere' in the past tense.

โš ๏ธ Special Note: When using Essere, the ending of the past participle must change to match the gender and number of the person speaking.
Italian ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Pronunciation ๐ŸŽง English Meaning ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
So-no an-da-to I went (Male)
So-no an-da-ta I went (Female)
E ve-nu-to He came
E ve-nu-ta She came
Sia-mo ar-ri-va-ti We arrived
So-no u-shi-ti They went out

๐Ÿ’ก How the ending changes:

๐Ÿ‘ฆ Male (Singular): -O (Andato)
๐Ÿ‘ง Female (Singular): -A (Andata)
๐Ÿ‘ฌ Male (Plural): -I (Andati)
๐Ÿ‘ญ Female (Plural): -E (Andate)
